Like a nice, cozy comfort movie that you pull out of the rack as you find yourself alone and needs some ME-time, “Dreams/ My Rope” fits the scene perfectly. Though not as long as that film, St. Even’s first single from his debut Spirit Animal carries through as affecting with lush harmonies by Steven Hefter’s folk sensibilities. Sounding like an unplugged number, the song actualizes what it is you need, a fetching melody thickened by unwired guitar and girl-boy cooing, hitting the right notes as you stretch out coffee in hand and smiling by yourself. “Dreams/ My Rope” is added to that playlist, the kind where you play when that comfort film is too long.
Portland-based St. Even is Steven Hefter’s solo effort after providing “musical heartache since the late 90’s.” Spirit Animal is out on now via Dubstin Records.
