French Film Festival 2012 in Manila (Films + Schedule)

Which film could be the champion torchbearer for French cinema today than Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist?  Sweeping both the major awards at Cannes and the Oscars, the black and white silent movie that gloriously celebrates the love for films has made moviegoers swoon over its sterling quality of entertainment and old-fashioned romantic comedy.

In Manila, what A. O. Scott called a “dazzling cinematic objet d’art” is now headlining the 2012 French Film Festival. One can say that this is the most anticipated showing in this year’s line-up, more like 2011’s The Tree of Life by Terrence Malick.

This year’s program includes two major highlights, the June 12 Philippine Independence Day commemoration which features all- Filipino world-class cinematic works by already festival circuit players Auraeus Solito , Raya Martin, Adolfo Alix, Jr. and Ralstom Jover (a separate attention will be given to 2009 Cannes’ Best Director Brilliante Mendoza’s latest work Captive). Another one is the presence of Olivier Assayas, one of the most revered French directors,  who will give a talk at a Master Class at the UP Film Institute on June 7.

The 17th French Film Cinema is made possible by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the French Embassy with sponsorship of Citibank and Rustan’s. The run will be from  June 8 to 17 at the Shang Cineplex of the Shangri-La Plaza.
